Dave,

In TSM, when changing the device type for a storage pool, I would recommend,
creating a new device class, for pointing to the new esoteric. Then create
a new stgpool, using that new device class. Update the stgpool hierarchy to
refer to the new stgpool (or if writing direct to it, update the management
class to point to it).

Once that's done, you'd update the old tape stgpool to have the new pool as
the next level. Then force a migration of the data from the 9840d's to the vsm.

If that is not possible, try going through and updating any of the tapes,
that are on the 9840d's, and change their status from readwrite to readonly.
 This effectively does the same type of thing as the markfull of hsm.
