Hi,

It's hard to believe how odd (I'm trying to be kind) that IBM can be
sometimes. You will get the z/OS and z/OS.e 1.8 required maintenance for
the z10BC (2098device) just by downloading the current 2098device PSP.
Remember the z/10 came out in 2008, so of course z/OS (and z/OS.e 1.8 are
supported).

Make absolutely sure that you make your LPAR name start with ZOSExxxx (the
ZOSE part is a requirement for the LPAR name or you will get an IFA200W
message at IPL.

Also since your workload already qualified for z/OS.e, you should be able to
convert it to z/NALC REALLY easily. In that case, you would just make a few
changes to your IFAPRDxx member from the z/OS.e settings to just plain z/OS,
and when you IPL you are now under z/OS!!! It's really that simple. That's
why the 2098DEVICE bucket is the same for z/OS and z/OS.e, they are really
(mostly) the same binaries.

You would think that they (IBM) would be more knowledgeable and helpful, but
they aren't. You probably got someone who had no idea what z/OS.e was and
they found it on some non-marketed list and read that to you. You can run
1.6 on the z/10 with only a few small apar changes, and I would guess that
you already have the maintenance that is required to support the 2098 on
your current configuration. To check quickly, you can go to your ISPF/PDF
HCD option and try to change your CPU model in a work set to the z10 (2098
is the z/10 BC). If it shows up, then you are really already ready to go.
There are some fixes to make the specialty processors run better in the
2098DEVICE upgrade, but for the most part, there is nothing that you
absolutely need to move your system there just to upgrade to z/OS 1.12. If
you are planning on execution of z/OS.e for an extended period of time, then
applying the maintenance is (probably) a good idea.

This is one of the scenarios that I'm going to cover in my Anaheim SHARE
presentation to describe how misleading the meanings of some of IBM's terms
can be. Just because something is no longer marketed, doesn't mean it won't
work, or isn't supported. Sometimes people have a hard time telling the
difference between the terms.

You should have asked the IBM guy if that means that you no longer have to
pay for z/OS when you move to the z/10. I'll bet you would have gotten a
different answer that the one you received. :-)
