Did you strictly follow IBMs requirements for cascading Ficon? I seem to remember that they are must more strict than for FCP connections, which allows for more paths to be taken through the SAN. In those configurations you can get errors with IBM Ficon and the errors might start to occur when the 'invalid' paths are being taken, which can be some later time after implementing the configuration.
