There were two parts. One was, as you noted, incorrect; stem.= does
indeed drop existing values. However, the part about stem.0 is
correct; it does not affect any other compound variables, does not
create an array[1] and does not limit what tails you can use for other
compound variables with the same stem.
[1] Rexx, unlike OREXX, has no arrays.
