While I agree with you in principle, I recall a few exceptions over the last fifty years. At one data center my boss wanted a "news" item added to the HASP/JES2 log; my first attempt resulted in a page and a half of code, and HASP abending the first time the printer ran out of paper in the middle of printing the news. Almost by accident I found a similar feature in some mods from the University of Waterloo - they did it better with three lines of code!

And for the tape copy, I'd start with the drive manuals, then use COPYMODS or similar utility and change the sizes and CCWs appropriately; shouldn't take more than a few days with thorough testing <g>
