Your colleagues need to learn about UNIX, and you should take every opportunity to teach them what you know about it. Like everyone else, they will learn best when either 1) they see a clear reason/need to do so or 2) they find something appealing/cool/sweet about what they are learning. There will even be some spillover: my grandson thinks I am (locally and temporarily) cool because I was able to teach him to write Perl. That said, you have not made a good case for the use of UNIX here. There is no need to use it in order to make long, perspicuous file names available. PDSE-member aliases may be longer, indeed much longer, than UNIX path names. Look in the current program management (binder) users guide to see just what is currently available. You will, I suspect, be surprised. The traditional eight-character length limit is still in place for both PDS and PDSE member names proper; but PDSE member-name aliases may now be very much longer, may contain instances of the break characters, '_', to improve readability, etc., etc.
