This is an interesting journalistic device.  If you look hard
enough, you can always find some way to categorize your own
contestant(s) as the winner(s).

That reminds me of probably the most blatant example. Back in the seventies, the USSR and the US held a track meet, and Pravda reported that the USSR took second place, and USA was next to last!
