the issues raised in the selinux post
http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/list-archive/0409/8362.cfm

was that there has been other security technology (other than selinux)
that was widely used by various gov. agencies starting nearly 40 years
ago (they were some of the early adopters) ... and that this nearly 40
year old (mainframe) technology is starting to see a resurgance as the
new, new security thing.

for some topic drift ... at one point there were proposals from the
early-90s that chipcards with all that information replace current
drivers licenses ... megabytes of memory crammed into the plastic thing
in your wallet. the proposals assumed that you could put some certified
bits in the plastic thing ... and that when stopped the law enforcement
officer, rather than doing a real-time, online check, would instead
check the information resident in your card. the issue then became if
the information in the card was stale and the officer would have to do
the real-time check anyway ... what possible information wouldn't be
online and therefor needed to be in the card (or conversely what
information would there be in the card that wouldn't be found online).

for you question ... if they are legacy apps ... they still may use IMS
... one large financial transaction network, claimed that a couple years
ago they owned 100 percent availability to

1) automated operator
2) ims hot-standby

of course, ims hot-standby was one of the earliest adopters of my wife's
"peer-coupled shared data" architecture from when she did her stint in
POK in charge of loosely-coupled architecture
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#shareddata

then there was all the news stories that were swirling around when cal.
DMV decided to switch off ibm mainframes to another vendor.

when we were doing ha/cmp product
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#hacmp

we coined the terms "disaster survivability" and "geographic
survivability" to differentiate from simple disaster/recovery. we were
then invited to do a section in the corporate "continuous availability"
strategy document ... however, much of it was subsequently removed when
both rochester and pok complained that they wouldn't have such features
for quite some time.
