the issues raised in the selinux post http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/list-archive/0409/8362.cfm was that there has been other security technology (other than selinux) that was widely used by various gov. agencies starting nearly 40 years ago (they were some of the early adopters) ... and that this nearly 40 year old (mainframe) technology is starting to see a resurgance as the new, new security thing. for some topic drift ... at one point there were proposals from the early-90s that chipcards with all that information replace current drivers licenses ... megabytes of memory crammed into the plastic thing in your wallet. the proposals assumed that you could put some certified bits in the plastic thing ... and that when stopped the law enforcement officer, rather than doing a real-time, online check, would instead check the information resident in your card. the issue then became if the information in the card was stale and the officer would have to do the real-time check anyway ... what possible information wouldn't be online and therefor needed to be in the card (or conversely what information would there be in the card that wouldn't be found online). for you question ... if they are legacy apps ... they still may use IMS ... one large financial transaction network, claimed that a couple years ago they owned 100 percent availability to 1) automated operator 2) ims hot-standby of course, ims hot-standby was one of the earliest adopters of my wife's "peer-coupled shared data" architecture from when she did her stint in POK in charge of loosely-coupled architecture http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#shareddata then there was all the news stories that were swirling around when cal. DMV decided to switch off ibm mainframes to another vendor. when we were doing ha/cmp product http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#hacmp we coined the terms "disaster survivability" and "geographic survivability" to differentiate from simple disaster/recovery. we were then invited to do a section in the corporate "continuous availability" strategy document ... however, much of it was subsequently removed when both rochester and pok complained that they wouldn't have such features for quite some time. ... random selection of news URLs from last week on the new, new 40-year thing http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/051212/sfm116.html?.v=24 VMware Delivers VMware Player http://ne.sys-con.com/read/162108.htm Xen Open Source Project Readies Version 3.0 http://ne.sys-con.com/read/163887.htm OpenVZ Project Introduces Open Source Virtualization Website http://www.businesstodayegypt.com/printerfriendly.aspx?ArticleID=6204 Intel Virtualization Technology (VT) Explained http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat/archives/2005/12/vmware_goes_mai.html VMware goes mainstream http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;351307096;fp;16;fpid;0 VMware releases Player, teams up with Mozilla http://www.computerworld.com/hardwaretopics/storage/story/0,10801,106856,00.html Council moves on virtualization, IP telephony http://www.computingchips.com/new/viewArticle.php?article_id=4076 VMware Delivers VMware Player http://www.crn.com/sections/breakingnews/breakingnews.jhtml?articleId=175001992 Open Source, Software | SWsoft Backs OpenVZ.org Open-Source Virtualization http://www.crn.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=175001992 Open Source, Software | SWsoft Backs OpenVZ.org Open-Source Virtualization http://www.d-silence.com/story.php?headline_id=22120&comment=1 VMware Delivers VMware Player http://www.dqchannels.com/content/reselleralert/105120916.asp Intel debuts virtualization support for desktop chip http://www.hardwarezone.com/news/view.php?id=3321&cid=11 VMware Delivers VMware Player http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=175001755 Virtual-Machine Player | VMware Partners With Mozilla On Virtual-Machine Player http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/12/12/HNvmwareplayer_1.html VMware releases Player, teams up with Mozilla http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3570381 Free VMware Player Ready to Go http://www.linuxelectrons.com/article.php/20051214114500976 OpenVZ Project Introduces Website to Support OS Virtualization Technology http://www.linuxpr.com/releases/8325.html Linux PR: OpenVZ Project Introduces Website Support Operating System Virtualization Technology for Open Source Community http://www.linuxworld.com.au/index.php/id;351307096;fp;2;fpid;1 VMware releases Player, teams up with Mozilla http://www.newsfactor.com/news/Open-Source-Firm-Challenges-VMware/story.xhtml?story_id=0330012RR2N6 Open-Source Firm Challenges VMware http://www.newsfactor.com/news/Open-Source-Firm-Challenges-VMware/story.xhtml?story_id=1000039HJUX4 Open-Source Firm Challenges VMware http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=12928 What Is Virtualization http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=12952 VMware Player 1.0 released http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=12977 Xen Virtualization Quickly Becoming Open Source 'Killer App' http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/12-12-2005/0004232349&EDATE= VMware Delivers VMware Player http://www.sci-tech-today.com/news/Open-Source-Firm-Challenges-VMware/story.xhtml?story_id=033003ON3G9U Open-Source Firm Challenges VMware http://www.techweb.com/wire/software/175001681 VMware Partners With Mozilla On Virtual-Machine Player ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
