I doubt the alternative.
Records length>32760
1. QSAM. It can be RECFM=VBS,LRECL=up to 32767. Hard to define, but it's
possible. COBOL does not support it.
2. QSAM, LRECL=X. Also RECFM must be V and S. Not supported by COBOL.
3. VSAM defined with SPANNED keyword. Max rec size up to CA size
(roughly). Not for LDS, RRDS, vRRDS. Not supported by COBOL.
4. LRECL=nnnnK. I only for ANSI tapes. I don't know about max. record size.
