Bob - I recall reading something about a chip inside the 3592 cartridge that, among other things, contains a tape 'VTOC' which is presumably used to perform a high speed search to locate multiple files on the cartridge. We have a small pool of several hundred 3592s in our ATLs that we use natively for specialized apps like SMF data but they are not generally used by the applications community. These all contain single files so I couldn't answer directly to your question.
The remainder of the 3592s in the libraries back our IBM VTSs. Given the increased tape capacity, we are concerned with the seek time of the 3592s, i.e., will they noticeably delay recalls? I'd appreciate comments from those with experience in this area. TIA.
