That might be better put "dynamic pathing, dynamic pathing, dynamic
pathing".  You not only don't have to code path definitions, but if there
are multiple paths between two end point and one path fails, switching to
another path is nondisruptive.  That would be a huge advantage even if we
had to hard-code the paths.

It seems to me that this dynamic pathing could have been provided with
clasic subarea SNA.  The mapping of Explicit Routes to Virtual Routes
could have been dynamic rather than static.  It wouldn't surprise me if
that had been intended as a "next step" but was abandoned whan APPN gained
a foothold.
