there was the tech. transfer of system/r (original relational/sql dbms
done on vm) from research to endicott for (vm) sql/ds
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#systemr

one of the people in this meeting
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/95.html#13

commented that they had handled much of the tech. transfer from
endicott back to stl for db2.

can you say shelby? ... toronto lab. was given job of writing a
relational database system in C for os2. ported then to aix3.2
(crosswinds?). eventually ported to other unixes ... and called db2.

i vaguely remember toronto lab. trying to recruit people from univ.
of toronto that understood relational database systems.

DB2 Is the Next Logical eServer Convergence
http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh020705-story01.html

from above:

IBM has at three distinct relational databases sold under the umbrella
name of DB2: one for OS/400 servers, one for mainframe servers, and
another for Windows, Unix, and Linux servers. Having watched the
eServer hardware platform consolidation, which could result in the
mainframe merging into the Power server line in coming years, I'm
wondering if DB2 is next. I think it's time for IBM to revisit its
relational database past, and dig deeper into the first such software
it ever sold: the integrated database in the System/38 and the AS/400.

... snip ...

so why is it called "DB2" ... possibly because eagle was going to be
called "DB1" (and canceled before it is ever shipped) ... some
discussion of eagle, system/r, and db2 at the system/r reunion in 1995
http://www.mcjones.org/System_R/SQL_Reunion_95/sqlr95-DB2.html

in the above ... a name of a person mentioned in this post
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/95.html#13

also shows up (with regard to db2). the reunion reference also mentions
a lot of the people hired away to tandem.

the above reunion article also mentions how expensive 3270 terminals
were. they were perceived to be expensive capital equipment (and
internally required vp executive approval to order). one of the things
that helped break that impression was that we did a 3-year, fully
depreciated analysis for 3270 terminals which came out to be about the
same as monthly cost of business phone (which went on every employees
desk as a matter of course ... and you actually had 3270 terminls doing
service for 10 years or more).

it also mentions gray's mipenvy article, random past posts on the subject:
