According to my very limited research/experience, many (most?) spam filters do
not acknowledge suspected spam in any way. And that makes sense as any reply
will inform the spammer of the legitimacy of the email address, making it more
valuable and thus subject to stepped up attacks.

Yes, I agree that I am wondering why I pay for the crappy service I am getting.
The service does stop about 90% of the virus payloads, which does help a little
in that I might accidently open one.

The miscreants are winning. Sigh.

The filters explain why messages are rejected. They don't explain why messages
just vanish. A properly configured MTA will send a 5yz response if it won't
deliver the message. It should only send a 250 response if the message will be
delivered. Verio should be able to tell by looking at their logs, assuming that
they know how.

With or without notification to the senders? Has anybody run a packet trace to
see what is happening?

That's as bad as no filtering. It's very easy to inadvertently discard
legitimate messages while scanning through the garbage. BTDT,GTS.
