I am an applications programmer as well, and I can tell you that I have used the SDSF REXX interface with no problems. ISTM it would be just what you need to use for the function you describe.
I use it frequently to extract the JESMSGLG from multiple jobs in the output queue to a REXX stem and write out those lines o a dataset for other (more complex) REXX code to analyze in a separate step.
