I knew that phrasing would bite me <gr> I meant "CCWs used with
mainframe channels" and "sense presented to mainframe channels", as
opposed to SCSI/Fibre channels. Many devices support both types of
native attachment, but the opcodes and sense are different on each
interface to support the requirements of that interface. So a 3590
books listing SCSI sense (or whatever they call it on SCSI) may not be
much help interpreting sense on your z/OS console or EREP.
It is hard to know what generic term to use for the mainframe. Even IBM
has issues. The 2105 manual for mainframe is called
IBM Enterprise Storage Server S/390 Command Reference (SC26-7298-01)
although it applies to zSeries as well.
Plus, since zSeries now supports SCSI and Fibre channels for Linux and
z/VM, the names get even fuzzier.
I have seen the term "OEM" applied to descriptions of mainframe channel
operations. OEM is of course "original equipment manufacturer" and I
guess the term came because the manuals helped non-IBM CPU and I/O
device manufacturers code their channel stuff. *

It was called 'OEMI' I forgot what I stands for, presumably Interface.
This book descibes Bus&Tag infterface, including plug construction,
signal characteristics, voltage levels etc. See GA22-6974

Regarding to the "CCW vs SCSI codes" issue: One must remember that 3592
drives are connected to mainframe indirectly. There's controller box in
the middle, as well as FC switch (Fiber Channel, not FICON).
Mainframe-controller connection is FICON, while Controller-Drive
connection is FC with the switch. Open systems can use the drives
directly. That's big difference. The other difference can be that one
can have different models of controller (old A60 or new shining J70).
