Hi Folks,
I would like to make a request of the readers, if you have time to
look at this, and for your general information.
The PDSLOAD program is like a subset of IEBUPDTE, in that it will
reload members of a partitioned dataset
from a sequentialized copy, using member separators ./ ADD
NAME=xxxxxxxxx like the IEBUPDTE member name separators.
The difference is that PDSLOAD can preserve ISPF statistics (old kind
and new kind). PDSLOAD works together
with the OFFLOAD program or the LISTPDS program, that do the
"sequentialization" of PDS members and preserve
the ISPF statistics in the later columns of the ./ ADD NAME cards.
PDSLOAD source and OFFLOAD source may be found in CBT Tape
File 093, and the latest materials should be downloaded from the UPDATES
page of www.cbttape.org. Source for
LISTPDS can be found on File 316 on the CBT directory of www.cbttape.org
(member LISPDS I think.)
Gerhard Postpischil has created a new version of PDSLOAD which
addresses several problems, mentioned below.
Gerhard's version is a rather big change, and I would like people to
TEST it, before I "put it into production".
The general story is in my notes below, written in member $$$$DOC9
of File 093 from the Updates page.
Note to readers from Sam Golob (Feb. 5, 2012)
For now, this version of PDSLOAD will be called PDSLOADN in File
093. It is a bit too different from the last PDSLOAD version
which is member PDSLOADW, and it should be tested very thoroughly
before it becomes eligible to become the "default PDSLOAD source".
Of course anyone is welcome to try and test member PDSLOADN.
It's just that the PDSLOAD program is so pervasive in the CBT
Tape collection that I don't want to "rock the boat" and change
it to this version until it is thoroughly tested.
The main problem dealt with in PDSLOAD is that it checks member
names for "validity" before it loads a new pds member with that name.
I took a vote among two people: Greg Price said to eliminate the
validity check for member names altogether. Gerhard Postpischil
said to keep it in. Gerhard was willing to put his money where
his mouth is, so he programmed a new version of PDSLOAD, here
presented as member PDSLOADN.
Gerhard's new version has options. Default is to eliminate the
validity check. Two other options are to either check the name
in a limited manner, or check the name in a stricter manner.
Again, the change is kind of drastic. So I am inviting the
public to test the new PDSLOADN member and report the results
back to me. If successful, this will become the new PDSLOAD
source. Thanks.
All the best of everything to all of you.
Sincerely, Sam
