We had our TS7720 connected this way in the beginning, because of a misunderstanding between the TS7700 and the SAN people. We had some link problems, I don't recall the symptoms anymore. After explanation from IBM, it seemed understandable, because of the difference between the Ficon and Fcp (who tolerates it) protocols. Something with re-routing in case of SAN problems on part of the connections.
