Shmuel,

The different NetID problem can be expressed in these terms: With subarea
SNA, between subarea nodes, you can have network boundaries only INSIDE an
NCP. This clearly excludes VTAM to VTAM SNI over a channel. With LEN and
APPN the network boundary can be on the link between nodes. If the network
boundary is between APPN Network Nodes, at least one of them needs the
additional smarts of an APPN "border" node - and if only one of the Network
Nodes is a "border" node, the other is the entrance to a peripheral
network - I think I've expressed that correctly.

With subarea peripheral nodes there's a further subtlety in that the
SSCP-dependent logical units (LUs) can participate in sessions in the
subarea network using a NetID different from that of the SSCP which has
activated them. I only know this because I once claimed in a "forum" such as
this newsgroup that this wasn't possible and got slammed down by a VTAM
developer!
