Hi Bob, >Your reliance on RSMDATA presumes that RSM data areas will be available in >a dump. This has been true historically, but the practice has been getting >scrutiny as customers have been able to run with ever larger amounts of >main storage.
Well, on our systems I have made sure that all the dump options are set to get me this information (I think). And given that our default options are always asked for by each vendor, I don't think we'll be getting rid of them. Also, IBM always asks for those options for their dumps. So unless IBM decides not to dump things anymore, that won't be a problem. <vent on> In order to avoid the infamous excuse 'the needed storage is not dumped', all expensive options have to be there, anyway. And believe me, I am still getting the excuse and problems not properly debugged. When I verify that storage is indeed not there, *I* am the one that has to ask 'Why is it not there'. IBM doesn't even care other than telling me they cannot do anything. So if the dumping process gets changed by IBM, I'll still attempt to get those data.</vent off> >You may need to get familiar with DISPLAY(MACHINE) as an >option since some dumps may eventually only have storage key information >for storage that the dumping process decided was important enough to dump. When I started out, I used that option. In 90% of all cases the storage key was needed for the summary data, and that key wasn't included back then, so I had to use rsmdata anyway. >If dumped pages have RSM attributes that are sufficiently important that >you would want them captured along with each dumped page and formatted via >DISPLAY(MACHINE), let us know. Don't know what I'll be needing. Last time I checked why storage is not dumped, I looked at all the output from rsmdata realframe (and then still had to ask Jim what it means). >We tried to put enough reserved space in the front of dump records when >we went from LRECL=4104 to LRECL=4160 (remember HBB3310?) No, I skipped that. I went from OS/VS1 to hbb4420. It confused the hell out of me that there was something called JES and that no one needed to start the card readers anymore. :-) Best regards, Barbara -- Lust, ein paar Euro nebenbei zu verdienen?
