No and NO nO nO NO!!!! PLEASE UNDERSTAND HERE...

I am not intended to do any harm here..Im just interested in the
"legacy" systems that Governments use like the Mainframes...I want to
learn more about them. Hope this helps to clear anyt negative concerns.
I know and I am aware that my questions are odd and I am sorry to scare
some people here off.

Give it a rest folks, I am no hacker nor intended to do any damage.

I just want to know how things work behind the scenes..For example, I
want to know how my bills get processed so I can say to myself:
"Oh....There using this or that system" to process my bills...Thats all
there is to it..No worries.

Please, relax.

Thank you -

I went to my local DMV office and I saw the black screen with the green
text that said DMV AUTOMATION...on a TN3270 (i think) screen...

Are those terminals accessed via a Mainframe or an RS/6000?

I saw alot of them on the teller's screens...It seemd to me as they
were the TN3270 emulation screens...And one said, from far away DMV
AUTOMATION....I suppose that was the login screen or something...I
couldnt make it out because I was sitting far away...

And I when I approached my teller's area, I kind of leaned over to see
what server thay were accessing but it was all in green text....

Can anyone have an insight on this?

The terminals are accessed via the keyboards connected to them. Now
they could be used to access a mainframe, a RS/6000, an AS/400, a "Unix"
system, a Windows system, or any other computer type or OS in the world.
You do know that you can telnet into a Windows box and use a text
based screen to run programs.

It is very difficult to tell what a screen is. Some of the ATM's I use
are black screens with green text, I know that they are not TN3270
sessions. They could be TN3270, TN5250, one of the many other terminal
screens that are supported under telnet (VTxx, Wyse, ANSI, and about 50
others), or it could be PC's Command promtp window with a menu setup
with ANSI control characters.

As far as the term AUTOMATION, this is what they could call their system.

Is there any specific infromation you are trying to gleam? It seems
that you are asking a lot of questions about DMV and other government
system. You know you might be able to get a contact name/number of your
local DMV's IT support team and call them as ask them.

Well you have to look at it from our point of view. Here is somebody asking all these questions about systems that are run by various governments that contain personal information.

You really can't tell what backend system are being used for what. Example: Most airlines use IBM mainframes for the reservation system. Some have two systems in place. The IBM mainframes and farms of Linux/Windows boxes. The Linux/Windows boxes have copies of the information and when you are looking up what it cost to fly someplace these systems are used, however when you click that "I want to buy it now" button, all the information is then sent to the IBM mainframe to verify that that price is still valid and the purchase is done on the IBM mainframe. You can't tell one system from the other. The same is true for most other industries that have used computers for decades.
