You said what I was trying to think of how to say. The only reason that
I can think of to have such a "solicitor" would be laziness on the part
of the user (sorry, Gil, just my opinion). All my emulators are already
set up to connect to the correct port. If I want a VTAM application, I
double-click on that profile in Hummingbird. If I want a UNIX Shell
prompt, I double-click on a different profile. I cannot imagine wanting
to have access to a VTAM application via PuTTY. It does not do Tn3270
emulation. But, even then, I can select which profile to use in PuTTY.

And if somebody were to create such a "solicitor", where would it end?
Gil wants it to select between VTAM and UNIX shell. Why not also be able
to select a "line mode" web server (similar to Lynx?). Or maybe the ftp
server? Or even a UNIX shell via "telnet", "ssh", or "rlogin"? Just
seems simplier to me to select the correct PORT from the client.
