There is just a bit more to MIM than just a GRS replacement.  Managing ENQs
and 
Reserves within a Sysplex does not really require MIM.  Across Sysplexes, it
is needed.
Tape Drive Management (Reel, Cart, ATL, Silo, VTS, VTAPE) among z/OS systems
may
be do-able.  Across Sysplexes, Data Centers, with z/VM and z/Linux requires
MIM.
Console Message routing within a Sysplex is also do-able.  Messages across
Sysplexes,
from z/VM, and z/Linux Guests to a focal system requires MIM.
