Tom, My experience is similar to yours. If something is put directly in front of someone (e.g. in the form of a message or pop-up window etc), at least some people will read it. If it's put in a tutorial or long help message (i.e. something that requires someone to press the F1 help key), the chances of it being read are somewhere between slim and none. This is why I think all vendors should at least try to put features in plain view, and not hide them in manuals or tutorials or drop-down menus (etc).
