If I didn't know better, I would swear you were peeking inside our shop. It is 
not a case of affordability, it is the *server per project* mentality. I attend 
a weekly project review meeting and am astonished that the LOBs believe 
everything the vendors tell them!

What's wrong with this picture below?  

"XYZ project needs a full rack of blades" or "We need out own 32-way Power5 box 
with 32 licenses of WAS"?

I am constantly fighting the battle to find out the *true* requirements. When I 
try and propose an alternative solution, I get "We don't (or won't) certify our 
software for that configuration. As you may know, banks buy a lot of solutions 
versus building them and I find it absolutely ludicrous what the vendors get 
away with on the distributed platforms. Pressure to move forward with the 
"certified" configuration" mounts and I lose a lot of the battles. Enter zLinux 
and now I hope to be able to attack the issue on TCO. Wish me luck!
