I believe the esoteric must be defined as it is interegated before the SMS routines take control. We have a few Esoterics with only one device in them used as a placeholder to keep from having JCL errors in our "legacy" JCL. We override the UNIT in our SMS routines, but this is takes effect after the JCL has already been validated.
