The short answer is that sharing tape is a whole lot different than DASD. And the 3494 is a beast unto itself.
I think a reasonable answer to your specific question in your assumed context is that sharing cannot be done. For example, there is a way to share the *unit*, but sharing the tape volumes within the unit is a whole different bucket of worms. You have SMS issues as well as tape management software to dance with. If that were not bad enough, sharing catalogs is yet another bear with a bad attitude. There is more, but I think you might get the idea. HTH and good luck. -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Pace Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2006 10:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Newbie DASD sharing question I have a 3494 tape library that I now need to share temporarily between 2 systems. An OS390 2.8 and a zOS 1.7. As I understand it I need share SYS1.VOLCAT.VGENERAL. In VSE we share DASD pretty easily using a common lock file. I have read some about GRS, is this what is required to share DASD in an MVS environment?
