The short answer is that sharing tape is a whole lot different than
DASD. And the 3494 is a beast unto itself.  

I think a reasonable answer to your specific question in your assumed
context is that sharing cannot be done. 

For example, there is a way to share the *unit*, but sharing the tape
volumes within the unit is a whole different bucket of worms. You have
SMS issues as well as tape management software to dance with. If that
were not bad enough, sharing catalogs is yet another bear with a bad
attitude. There is more, but I think you might get the idea.
