Tim, Right now DB2 has LOF Suspend function that allows you to spin-off application dependant copies of your DB2, because DB2 is looking after consistency. The function is analogous to the Oracle Online Backup Mode, but works differently.
Problem is that the Consistency time for DB2 does not tie in with VSAM datasets journalled by CICS, or Databases managed by IMS, IDMS and other DBMS and/or OLTP services that two phase commit with DB2. DB2 may commit its part of a Unit of work, while IMS, being a fraction behind DB2, decides to roll-back. If the facility provided an exit that could call execute some rexx scripts to interoperate with other automation (I'm thinking of "At-Time Split") it could be a very powerful facility.
