John, Both IBM's 3494/VTS and CA's CA-Vtape allow for virtual-volomes to be defined larger then a real 3490E. I believe we are talking about in the range of 1+ Gigabytes per virtual volume. If the dataset(s) being placed on the virtual-volume end before that, no wasted space (the beauty of virtual-volumes).

But, now I'm wondering about the future. Suppose we need to migrate something this large in the future? It appears that the emulated 3490E tapes in the 3494-B10 are "smaller" than a real 3490E (both are ECST tapes - I hope - I cannot validate what the tape librarian did when she inserted the emulated volumes in the B10). Any ideas other than "don't do that!"? <GRIN> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
