This is 2006. We have telephones now.

Besides, the "Vulcan mind meld" is fictional, and didn't work with
machines anyway.

Ahh but that assumes a lot of things are in place. Just because they are in one place doesn't mean its universally true. You are right in one sense but in the real world (the rest of inhabit) not true all the time.

Another example is attending a meeting
that is unorganized and trying to get something accomplished.

Ditto.

Hmmm Here it is again assuming that people want to get to the same objective. Not always the case and politics trumps all, especially in large organizations and multisite in which it just get worse.

I would love to see it work I just don't see it in the real world. Politics trumps all.

There is also the case where you get called from operations
and they start asking you questions that are less than clear
and they need an answer now.

Ditto again.

Politics is a key role here especially between departments. Is this bad management? Maybe or maybe not it depends on the organization. There is no clear (IMO) answer here. Each org is different (good and bad).

And before you retort with "We have incompetent operators", let me point
out that's a management problem, not a technical one.

I did not (in this case) say anything about incompetent operators and yes for them its is a management issue and there is no quick answer as each org is different. But until you get there you have to work in the framework you are in. Trying to get that resolved is a long term solution which I don't see ever getting resolved as the operations people are being squeezed from both sides to reduce costs (less money). This is one of weapons the outsources seem to grab onto quite easily.
