Hi List,
thanks for the discussion.
To my information, if I connect to WLM as subsystem DB2 from my
application, why should it not be possible to run enclave SRBs in zIIP.
So IBM does not allow to use purchased processors and keeps on changing
microcode that I am not able to use some clever mechanisms to save
money, what are the options?
We will leave the z/OS platform. Use all efforts to migrate off to
UNIX. Is that what IBM really wants?
Maybe they can keep their revenue high for the next 3-5 years and
after that? I am not in the mood anymore to fight for the platform
z/OS. If IBM does not fight for it, I don't care.
Every consultant that enters the company talks to the controllers and
what they see first (using the 80:20 method) is the z/OS software
costs. So instead for looking for something else they are picking on
the z/OS and subsystem licensing costs. For that its of no help to use
dedicated processors for specific types of work.
I don't need a solution for new workload (IFL, zAAP, etc), that
doesn't really exist and it's mostly playground of people that did not
gave up zSeries so far with very small projects and niche applications.
Due to accounting purposes I need a cheaper solution for my existing
z/OS workload, that then will allow me to hunt for the big new projects
(new workload), that we keep on loosing to the UNIX people.
Denis.

Subject: Re: zIIP (Was: Looking for SRB sample in PL/I or COBOL)
DB2 V8, WLM, zOS dispatcher - they decide if piece of work runs on CP
or
zIIP. Now only some SRBs in some enclaves are dispatched on zIIP. So
the
"licence" is enforced by code and microcode, you don't have to study
legal
stuff for that.
IFL - I am not sure what you mean by "In the VM context, IBM has
already
delivered software that will run fine on an IFL". z/VM runs on IFL and
it is
perfectly legal. IFL is designed for running Linux or Linux under
z/VM. z/VM
on IFLs is much cheaper then on CPs. What license doesn't allow is
running
z/OS under z/VM on IFLs.
All specialty engines are here to allow you running new workload.
Linux on
IFL, Java on zAAP, DB2 on zIIP. If you are on z890, all specialty
engines
run full speed regardless of CP speed.
If you have Java code, try to run estimator how much of that code
would run
on zAAP. It shows you how much of CP time you save.
