Is there any way that I can identify if any volumes in the 2105 were
created as 3390-9's.

Such as MVS console commands , HCD lookup or actually getting into the
2105?

As you've already seen in the other responses, emulated 3390-9 devices are
just 3390-3 with a certain standard number of cylinders.

When you use the ESS Specialist to define storage, you can choose to define
standard volumes or custom volumes.
3390-9 is one of the standard volumes (with 10017 Cylinders) that you can
choose to auto-allocate.
You can also choose to allocate custom volumes, namely, you choose how many
Cylinders per device.
I remember hearing that the ESS allocation for custom volumes was different
to that of standard volumes (distribution of the space in the array), but I
couldn't find a definitive explanation in the manual.
Maybe someone could confirm (or dispute) this. In any case, whether a
3390-9 is defined as a custom volume or a standard volume in the ESS, MVS
only sees that it is a 3390-3 type of device with 10017 Cylinders.
