This isn't without risk. My company is participating in an Internship program that is going to have interns in a number of areas for 6 or 8 weeks (I think). That is not really long enough to get into anything interesting, but is certainly long enough to bore them out of their collective mind. It would probably be a bit easier if the interns were going to stay with one group for an extended period, but I think the problem still exists. With little or no exposure to mainframes they are not easily understand anything being done that is actually interesting. There is lots of boring grunt-work to give them, but that won't make them want to stay.
