Just a general observation that there are some shops that have initial network problems when setting up their z/VM and Linux environments mainly because TCP/IP is "new." :-) In those cases it usually turns out that nobody sat down to do some good network planning and configuration, and the skills for network monitoring and management (particularly TCP/IP) are rusty and/or underdeveloped, especially with the new environment.
But this phenomenon pretty quickly diminishes, so keep at it. There's an IBM class I can recommend: course code ZV100. See http://www.ibm.com/services/learning to view the current schedule for that class. Also it's a real good idea IMHO to get some TCP/IP monitoring (with full scope coverage) if you don't have it -- ping is not a very good network monitor -- whether it's from IBM, Velocity, or some other vendor. That's the generic advice, though, which may not completely address your specific situation. - - - - - Timothy F. Sipples Consulting Enterprise Software Architect, z9/zSeries IBM Japan, Ltd.
