I'm pretty sure, it is possible to have more than one ESCON channel for 3590. However, the devil is in the details. It could depend on drive model (there are three "main" models: B, E, H and several flavors) and - IMHO more important - *controller* model. It is rather obsolete equipment, can be very cheap at second hand and very expensive at IBM. Sometimes the adapter card can be as expensive as whole controller.
