I have/am resolving my issue by implementing FDR Archive, and I will
stop hsm migrations. I see that the FDRTSEL program in FDR is similar
to HSM recycle. However my current issue with this process is the
release of tapes from RMM. FDRTSEL will consolidate all the Archive
backups onto a new set of tapes, but from what I can tell it doesn't
have any hooks into RMM to actually release the tapes that just got
replaced so they go scratch.
Is that accurate or am I missing something in the FDR product? My
current thought is to create a REXX and parse the output of the
FDRTSEL job and release the tapes from RMM that way.
Jasen, sect 80.32 of the manual has details on ABR and tape management.
Most customers use "catalog control" retention on archive tapes. When
FDRTSEL consolidates tapes, it recatalogs the backups to the new tapes,
so the old tapes become uncataloged and expire. You also need to run a
periodic REORG of the Archive Control File (sect 51.56) to purge expired
entries; this also uncatalogs tapes which are no longer needed.
You can also define ABR as an EDM (external data manager) for rmm, so
that ABR calls rmm to scratch tapes.
have just finished reading the FDR manuals (I only fell asleep a few
times.)
As the author, I wanted to compliment you. I usually fall alseep 5-6
times when I am proofing them.
