It can, however, be issued for NONSMS volumes if the error received prevents DFSMShsm from knowing if the volume is SMS- or NONSMS-managed. Doesn't the latter explain why? Do you have any ADDVOL'ed volumes that were INITIALIZED with the STORAGEGROUP keyword?
