My guess is it was deleted from another system.  The catalog is open on the
current system and still has access to the extents, so it will work.
However if those extents get overlaid with a new data set, you're hosed.

I'd STRONGLY recommend you find a way to never delete a CATINDEX (or the
catalog data component).
