It's kind of sad, isn't it... This guy spent who knows how much money on getting this patent, and it describes (as you say) basic procedures that were in routine use at least ten years before the application.
Sad because of all that money, but sadder still that the USPTO was so clueless as to think this was novel work. I don't suppose PUBPAT would take a look at it. Too expensive for a patent that's surely never going to be asserted. BTW, the patent has the complete source code at the end, in a form that strongly suggests that the patent office could make use of the product itself.
