If IBM really wanted to get new programmers interested in z/OS they
would make it Open Source. Most of the really good system programmers
that I know learned by resolving MVS problems by reading the source on
microfiche. The Open Source community is filled with new folks who love
to rip the source code apart and improve it. Many of the improvements in

MVS-z/OS have come from the system mods that the early system
programmers wrote.

Wow. I could not agree more strongly (probably because I have been
saying the same thing for more years than I can easily reckon).
Academic work has value and theory is important. But the CREDENTIAL
tells me nothing useful; only that dad (or somebody) had enough money to
let somebody put in the time and get the piece of paper. In more than
30 years' experience, degrees DO NOT CORRELATE with ability to do useful
work, either positively or negatively. They are not evidence either
way.
