In z/OS (don't know the lowest release but it's definitely in 1.4 onwards) you
can put the JESLOG keyword on the JOBCLASS(x) JESPARM definition, or over-ride
it with a $T JOBCLASS(x) command.
I do this for all my STCs ("JOBCLASS(STC)" in JESPARM), spinning off the
JESMSGLG and JESYSMSG at midnight to the held queue, so I have a trackable
daily set. (automation then purges on a rolling 7-day basis).
You can spin off at a time interval or at a set number of msg lines. Look in
the JES Init and Tuning reference for the JESLOG keyword on JOBCLASS parameter,
and the JES Commands for the keyword on the $T JOBCLASS command.

Subject: Spinning off a JOBLOG
A cohort who is unfamiliar with IBM-Main asked if I would post this. He
wants to know if there is a way to spin off a job log (I assume he is
refering to JESMSGLG) of a long running STC or job that has gotten too big?
I suggested that it had been asked for so many times that it either must
exist or can't be done. But I said I'd ask.

BTW, I searched the archive but came up with no hits. I suspect I picked
bad keywords 'cause this MUST have been asked before.
