I wonder if these types of situations will cause the pendulum to swing back
more towards roll-your-own software.
There has been a slight slowdown of buying canned packages for various
reasons because of the hurdles of customizing for one's particular
environment or redoing your business processes to fit canned software.
In many past cases, management lost faith in their own in-house
application developers. They became afraid of not having the "best of
breed" solution, built with "best practices" methodologies. But the
pendulum is swinging back somewhat because people are starting to
realize some awful truths:
* Many "shrink wrapped" solutions aren't any better (or cheaper)
than what you can produce yourself with competent applications
developers.
* Outsourcing on the part of the software suppliers has negatively
affected the quality of some of these packages.
* Worst of all, if you and your competitors all buy the same
so-called "best of breed" package, you've just lost your
competitive advantage!
