I would think the answer would depend heavily on how busy are the four
paths to the 2105 normally during the period planned for the transition.
If you are certain you need all four paths to carry the total load, then
it ought to be possible to run half the load on two paths. Consider
(1)migrating half the DASD load to the 2107 with two paths
(2)shift two paths from 2105 to 2107
(3)migrate remaining DASD to 2107
Or, if you are pretty confident that three paths will carry the load
during that period, go for three each and move additional path(s) to
2107 at the end of migration.
Or, if two channels are sufficient during slack time chosen for the
migration, then one could defer moving additional paths until after the
migration.
If DASD and channels are very heavily used all the time or loading is
highly unpredictable, another alternative would be to monitor response
times on the 2105 and 2107 during the migration process and be prepared
to shift paths to the 2107 in stages as the 2107 load increases and path
contention starts to become an issue.
I would be tempted in such a situation to try to bargain with IBM to
supply some additional FICON channels short term during the migration or
even for keeps as part of the migration package just to avoid having to
worry about path contention.

No directors. All point to point.
Good idea, though. Thanks

Assuming you have directors, why not have all 6 channels defined to both
storage frames.

We are on a countdown to move from a 2105-800 Shark to a 2107-921
DS8100. The motor is a z/890 2066-0A4. We are a 7x24 online shop with
some tight SLA's. All of our slack for years was consumed by a generator
failure.
We have four FICON paths to the Shark and two to the DS8100. The thought
is to swing one of the FICONs to the DS8100 making three each for the
transition.
The transition will be 'hot' using IBM services and the FDR product.
Question: are the channels faster in the DS8100? Should we stay with the
4-2 split until after the migration is complete?
