There's a great deal of attention now paid to helping new mainframe customers and new mainframe professionals begin learning. Toward that end here's a great starting point, "Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics." I would recommend passing this book along to anyone you know who is new to z/OS -- it looks like an insightful introduction.
