For DR type of restore you have to get the streaming right - probably what
you allude to when you mention getting the JCL right.
ExHPDM has code to try and optimize the tape usage. For example, if you
open one client file (one backup) and ExHPDM starts reading the stream
file (actual tape), then you open another client file on the same stream
tape but it starts earlier than the current position of the tape (it
already moved past the start of that client), there is a parameter that
says if the start of the new file is not too far back ("x" blocks)
ExHPDM will backup and handle the new client file. When it gets back to
the point on the tape where it was before, it will start passing blocks
to both clients. But if you don't open the second client soon enough,
it will finish the current client and then go back to the new client.
When you are opening many interleaved clients, it all gets very complex.
For FDRABR users, our FDRDRP product (for disaster recovery) works well
with ExHPDM without a lot of effort by the customer. It opens up to
100 backups at once, leaving ExHPDM free to go through the tape and pass
data to each restore as it finds the backup.
