very little presence in India after being asked to leave in the '70s.

Ron,

I know of at least one MAJOR financial institution that is moving one of their data centers in INDIA. And I am lead to believe that they aren't the only ones. I think the trend is to move the data centers to India. Now if you are talking used more or less exclusively in India, the numbers might be small but I think when you add in the "foreign" computers the numbers suddenly jump.

In Asia (including India) there are no organisations like Share, CMG, etc that allow partitioners to maintain and update their skills and knowledge - I know that because I live in Asia - and it's unlikely that there will be any time soon. Investment in specialised education is also fairly small
compared to Western countries, especially as most of it involves
international travel.

It's no surprise that search engines, forums, and web-sites are used so heavily by the Eastern Hemisphere to look for this sort of information.

In relation to the size of the country and population base there are not
many mainframe shops in China. Now that the VSE ones have all but
disappeared there are no more that 20 sites spread across less than 10
companies.
