Dave, Yes these are SMS volumes. I used already volcount(src) but was somehow intrigued when I saw the asterisks in ISPF 3.4 after restore of my test file :
Number of volumes allocated: 3 DB2Y01 * * This was a very small file which found space on 1 volume after restore. For the real job I will use volcount(any) as you suggested. Thank you very much.
