Those close enough might want to consider driving, taking Amtrak or
taking the bus. Anywhere from Raliegh to Boston or Albany and west to
around Pittsburgh might be tolerable by train as might the overnight
train from Birmingham and Atlanta. If the ban is still in effect when
my wife and I are traveling in November, it will be a problem.
Just pack your toothpaste, etc. in your checked luggage instead of your
carry-on. How big of a problem is that?
It's a big problem if all you have is a carry on.

days since stuff is stolen out of checked luggage
all the time.
Quite a conundrum.
