I do the opposite; my phone works everywhere I need or want to go. Since roaming fees are ridiculously expensive, if I'm going somewhere for long enough, I buy the cheapest SIM card when I get there.

I currently use a Canadian SIM and have a UK one in my wallet.

GSM phones have the personality imposed by their SIM cards. If you already have a GSM phone, just take the SIM card with you in your wallet and shove it into the rental phone. It then
"becomes" your phone  - your number, your normal billing.

All you need is a TN3270 emulator - several available free for download - and you can run TSO sessions on the system back home anywhere you like. My personal preferences are for IrDA
links followed by BlueTooth - I've never had much luck with cables.
