Here is the information from retain on CF failures during activation that brought one of our SYSPLEXes down:
ABSTRACT: Driver 63 MCL019, Bundle 23, in the J99671 (LPAR) stream has been placed in 'Hold' status in RETAIN. DESCRIPTION: z9 processors that use dedicated coupling links (vs. shared) on either O/S images or Coupling Facility images are exposed to a loss-of-connectivity problem after installing and activating LPAR EC J99671 MCL019 in Bundle 23. Problem is triggered by the system reset that occurs during activation or deactivation of a Coupling Facility image and is more likely to occur when there are multiple Coupling Facility images defined on a single CPC. Even though the status of the coupling channels will show as online/operating at the support element, the subchannels will not be enabled which will prevent any further connectivity. IMPACT: Depending upon how the Customer is configured with regards to sysplex connectivity, impact can occur in a number of ways: - Loss of connectivity between z/OS and Coupling Facility image (CFCC). Customer may see IXL type messages at z/OS console. - z/OS image(s) may be unexpectedly removed from sysplex (due to loss of connectivity). - z/OS images may not be able to join a sysplex (due to connectivity problems).
