I used "Principles of Operation" until I learned "POO" in the mid '70s.  
Seemed perfectly reasonable to me as an ordinary acronym.  It was much more 
recently that I first heard POp and POps.

Personally, I prefer POO, and will continue to use it but I tolerate the 
other variations.
